@Mitch: yes, google itself seems a bit Orwellian now -- just how much data / how much of our computing are we willing to put in its hands?

Makes sense.  I sincerely doubt that the rich and powerful -- people like Warren Buffett and Barack Obama -- spend much time trolling on the Internet.

John, we have another article from James about Reddit in the pipeline.

Certainly, marketing language (and other language) is perceived differently depending on whether the speaker is perceived as being in authority. Consider Google's motto, "Don't be evil." It was seen as plucky and courageous when the company was a startup. Now that it's a multi-billion-dollar behemoth, the motto is seen as Orwellian.

Yes, please, more articles about all this; I wonder if there's anything in the behavior of a company that makes a difference, or if it's sheer random luck?  Some company PR types think they're being rational and reasonable when they're being pompous and condescending; some, on the other hand, do very plain language and an appeal to the reader's sense of fairness pretty well (but then, some people may be able to read that as The Man Stepping On Us).  It would be very interesting to see a piece that dug through half a dozen cases, and see if there's any reliable right way.

@cmophil - I don't think it was the ads in particular.  The attack was specifically directed at us, so I think that he had an issue with us, but as to what it was, we have no idea.  He never resurfaced.

Why is that? Was that user opposed to ads in general OR was it something about the ad itself?

Scott - What are your favorite subreddits? I've tried Reddit a few times, but I never stick. Of course, I'm already spread pretty thin on social media.
