@cmophil - That's a great rule. If only more companies followed it. 

The rise of social search and tougher Google algorithms should reduce keyword stuffing, SEO-optimized text, and other tricks that make sites less usable for humans. I'm sure there'll be other sins to replace them, though.

Sadly people worry more about HOW the site looks first, not WHAT is on it. Most visitors will bounce quickly if your site looks great but there's junk all over. The first thing I learned in a web design course a loooong time ago was to make a minimal design for your site BUT make the content great. Then slowly build up the look & feel.

Facebook and other social media do not replace Websites, nor vice-versa. Strength in one doesn't eliminate the need for the other.

cmophil - It occurs to me that good content is the foundation of SEO, and most of the rest is getting the Website design out of the way of the content.

Small businesses should not rely on Facebook pages as a replacement for their websites for many reasons. For one, Facebook is limited in what you can do with it and it changes all the time. A website offers many options for content and functionality and is under the owner's control.

On the other hand, I have always wondered why some of the biggest consumer brands need elaborate websites. Am I really going to visit the Tide site to see how to use detergent?

No it is necessary. But the content must be there for the visitors/customers. What I'm saying is that alot of people put the carriage before the horse.

As a web developer in a past life, I cannot tell you how many clients I had that wanted to focus on doing SEO before they had even put up a website or blog. I asked them WHY??? You'll get people to your site & they'll bounce off just as quickly.

Enough to build a website about it - I doubt it.  You'd need to do a lot more than talk about a cookie to get consumers interested in your brand
